Unity: My Mac curiousity is on the rise

Mac fans are like die hard Christians. They appear to be nice people, that is until you question their beliefs, then they go utter bat shit insane. I had a Mac for about 3 months last year and while I liked a lot of features there was just this void in my life known as Office 2003. Oh and the keyboard shortcuts made absolutely no sense what so ever. Finding pirated applications was difficult and the Mac version of Firefox was no where near as nice as the Windows version.

Back on topic, check out Unity:

WWDC is next Monday. I know I'll be watching.

ThoughtFix gets his situation fixed

Congratulations!

Background:

ThoughtFix is a Nokia Internet Tablet junkie. He loves those things more than I like sleeping, something I should be doing so I have enough energy to party with Nokian's in Chicago in 17 hours, anyway: he posted a video on youtube of him taking apart his Nokia N800 and putting it back together. This geek pornography was taken down by Nokia due to DMCA violations and within less than week the situation has been resolved. His video will be back online soon and this marks the end of another chapter in the Nokia Legal history book.

Don't you love happy endings?

Interview: Pia Niemela of Nokia at JavaOne 2007

Clipboard02 Nokia, along with other mobile phone manufactures, are trying to reduce the fragmentation issue which plagues Java ME.

What is fragmentation?

The Java platform is composed of multiple units known as a Java Specification Requests (JSR). Not every device on the market has the same set of JSR's. What happens when a consumer attempts to download an application and it doesn't run? What happens when developers don't finish their application because a limited number of devices support the crucial JSR they need to build on top of? This is fragmentation in a nutshell.

Nokia is trying to introduce a new JSR called 249 which is kind of like a Windows Service Pack in the sense that it has multiple features wrapped into one big package. If mobile phone makers decided to become JSR 249 certified, than developers would have to deal with less fragmentation. Less developer frustration = more innovation on the platform.

This is why I'm rooting for Adobe and their Apollo platform. If they make Apollo achieve success on the mobile platform like they did Flash on the desktop, I'll be blown away.

Time will tell. The future however is certainly clear:

The internet is no longer about delivering content, but about building context specific applications with services and data. This is what Pia Niemela emphasizes in his interview and this is why anyone who loves the internet needs to embrace the fact that the browser will start becoming irrelevant.

We still have quite a while to go until that happens.

Welcome home to the three Nokia Siemens employees who were detained in Iran

Clipboard01

Talk about fishing trip gone horribly wrong! Three Nokia employees were hanging back in Persian Gulf near the island of Abu Musa. They were probably using a Nokia N95 to locate their current position because by the time the satellite signal got a lock it was too late and they were treading Iranian territory. Nokia Siemens spokesperson Barry French said that these men will return to Dubai shortly and best of all:

"We certainly appreciate the support of the government of Finland in reaching out to the Iranian counterparts."

Damn straight Finn's take care of their own! Finnish Ambassador Heikki Puurunen said the men are in tip top condition and they were treated well during their brief detainment.

Queue them up and bring them to 3GSM 2008, I need to buy these guys a round.

How can you make multitasking cool?

I love the 6300, 6500 Classic, Slide and 8600 Luna. They are gorgeous devices and since most of the applications I run are Java based I shouldn't have any problem switching from S60 right?

Wrong!

Series 40 doesn't multitask. It is the one thing stopping me from laying down all those precious dollars for an aluminum encased mobile communications device of beauty. I show people multitasking on my E61i and they say "so what?"

People don't get it because it doesn't look cool. The iPhone has that home button which brings you back to the menu screen so you can select what application you want to run. The transitions are neat, but I bet Nokia can top that.

Imagine if you could do this on your mobile device:

There is nothing wrong with the way S60 currently handles multitasking. It just isn't pretty or exciting. Imagine making a 3D environment where every single application has a face on a "cube." Multitasking just went from lame to "hey guys, look what my phone can do!"

Thoughts? I know I've been an advocate against bling, but after watching the Apple iPhone commercials I'm absolutely convinced that it will get people thinking about creating a richer user experience on their devices.

This post was inspired by these videos of the new HTC Touch.

N800 dissection video on youtube taken down by Nokia, why?

Anyone from the communications or public relations department have anything to say about this?

Nokia's Finnish Factory in Salo welcomes 300 new employees

14m Nice to see demand for Enterprise and Multimedia devices is growing so much that more people are needed to create our most beloved magic devices.

The name of the city, Salo, threw me off completely. If you ever want to see a movie that will scar you for life, Salo is definitely it.

Back on topic, I hope you guys enjoy your new post!

Almost half of the devices Nokia sold last year cost less than 50 Euros!

50_euros

For a company that sells some of the most high mobiles in the world it may come as a surprise to find out that 42% of what Finland's Finest sold cost less than 50 Euros according to Dresdner Kleinwort Investment Bank. Here is another interesting tidbit: 260 Million Euros was spent on advertising in 2006!

Holy Cow! If that much money was poured into the bleeding animal that is the Enterprise Division maybe they could turn a profit one of these quarters. Better yet, since I love the pursue of knowledge, pour some of that money into R&D.

He called Darla Mack a drooler! Its ok Darla, you should have seen how wet my shirt was after sleeping for 8 hours while flying to Spain. Ewww.

The sky is falling

Not really, but my internet is down at home.

AT&T will be getting the axe by the end of this month, I've got Charter coming in next Tuesday. 16 megabits per second baby, can you feel it? Can you feel it?!
